The Archbishop of Athens and All Greece, His Beatitude Ieronymos, on Wednesday morning officiated at the funeral service of iconic WWII resistance figure and left-wing politician Manolis Glezos. The service was held at the Athens First Cemetery.

Glezos died on Monday at the age of 98.

Only close relatives attended, given the strict restrictions on the non-essential movement imposed throughout country.

As a teenager, Glezos, along with Apostos Santas, had climbed up the Acropolis in central Athens in May 1941 to take down the swastika-adorned Nazi flag, which had been hoisted on the ancient monument a month earlier with the German occupation.

Archbishop Ieronymos disclosed that three years ago the deceased had requested a religious funeral and interment.
