Image of the Virgin Mary painted on rock formation above harbor of Kastellorizo

An emblematic depiction of the Panaghia, the Virgin Mary, has been expertly painted on the rock formation above the harbor of Kastellorizo, the small Greek isle in the extreme southeastern Aegean.

The image of the Panaghia, complete with a written blessing, comes after a recent provocation, whereby unknown suspects threw red paint on the surface of giant painted Greek flag on the isle, which lies some 2 nautical miles off the Anatolia coast. Kastellorizo of late has served as a target of the increasingly belligerent and bellicose Erdogan regime.

The rock painting is the work of artist Stratos Mylonas, from Xanthi, and comes after an initiative by Fr. Giorgos Maltezos, the most senior cleric on Kastellorizo, in tandem with the support of local residents.
