The inauguration of Joe Biden as the 46th president of the United States, along with the first female vice-president, Kamala Harris, took place on Wednesday with traditional pomp and pageantry associated with the oath-taking of America’s commander-in-chief.

At the same time, this inauguration was also unique, given the imposition of public health precautions to prevent exposure to the Covid-19 virus, as well as strict security measures – in the wake of the rampage earlier this month at the US Capitol by hundreds of protesters.

Immediately after sitting down in the Oval Office as the new US president, Biden signed 17 executive orders essentially rescinding previous decisions by his predecessor, Donald Trump.

Among others, the United States will rejoin the Paris Climate Accord and halt its departure from the World Health Organization.
