Inflammatory statement by Montenegro president ahead of Sunday election; bid to cover up months of persecution against Orthodox Church

Some 500,000 voters will head to the ballot boxes on Sunday in the small Adriatic country of Montenegro, in order to elect a new government.
The situation in the country remains fluid, given months of tension due to the state’s persecution of the Orthodox Church, its clergy and faithful.

In a particularly inflammatory and delusional statement this week, current Montenegro President Milo Đukanović, who for years led the Montenegro branch of the League of Communists of Yugoslavia, claimed that the result of the election will determine whether the country will continue its course to the European Union, or, become a “theocratic state”.
