Latest provocation by Islamist, irredentist Erdogan regime in Turkey targets Cyprus

Provocations by the Erdogan regime in Turkey against that country’s neighbors and even Christianity as whole continued unabated this week, with the latest threat targeting the eastern Mediterranean island of Cyprus. Islamist Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and the so-called prime minister of the pseudo-state set up in the Turkish-occupied areas of Cyprus said the fenced-off seafront resort of Varosha will soon open to the public.

By “public” in this case, they mean residents in the Turkish-occupied north of the island republic.

The pseudo-premier, Ersin Tatar, referred to a first step in opening up the area, which remains a sad ghost town since the summer of 1974, when Greek Cypriots fled their ancestral homes in the face of Turkish invasion forces.

On his part, Erdogan said he was aware of the significance of the opening of Varosha for Turkish Cypriots, claiming, in fact, that it belongs to them and the illegal regime propped up by Ankara.

Despite last week’s warnings of sanctions by EU leaders towards Turkey to stop its hostile actions in the eastern Mediterranean, Erdogan appears unmoved and even more bellicose.

On his part, Cypriot President Nicos Anastasiades strongly condemned the announcement, saying it is “…an exceptionally unacceptable situation.”

He added that his international recognized government will promptly file a recourse to the UN Security Council.

Anastasiades also held a series of telephone contacts with EU leaders, including Germany’s Angela Merkel, and UN officials.

Ankara’s decision to open the coastal road of Varosha is viewed as an effort to influence the pre-election climate in the pseudo-state, and to strengthen Tatar, hand-picked by Turkish leadership for the upcoming election.

In a related Turkey development, the controversial head of the predominately Muslim country’s religious affairs office, Ali Erbas, said both he and his increasingly authoritarian boss, Erdogan, consider that the Hagia Sophia, the greatest of all cathedrals of eastern Christendom, is a symbol Islam’s conquest and domination.

Joe Biden calls on Turkey to reverse decision to convert Hagia Sophia

Nevertheless, a stern reprimand against Erdogan came from halfway around the world, as Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden called on the Trump administration to “press” Turkey to stop its threats against Greece, while the former US vice-president also underlined that Turkey needs to reverse the decision to convert the Hagia Sophia to a mosque, allowing it to again operate as a museum — and “…ensuring equal access for all, including the Orthodox faithful.”
