The Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople has once again been targeted by Turkish media, with the latest provocative and offensive article claiming that the Ecumenical Patriarch, His All Holiness Bartholomew I, and members of the ethnic Greek minority in the Bosporus metropolis, provided assistance to Turkish Islamist scholar and preacher Fethullah Gülen and his followers in July 2016, in order to stage a coup against Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

The slanderous article was posted by the Turkish magazine “Gercek Hayat”, which is published by the same media group that publishes the staunchly pro-government and pro-ruling party Yeni Safak newspaper.

In a statement, the Ecumenical Patriarchate said the article targets members of the ethnic Greek community and religious leaders with false assertions.

The Ecumenical Patriarchate also expressed strong concern over the fact that it was being threatened with racist attacks and desecration.
