A top cadre of the main opposition party in Greece, leftist SYRIZA, last week expressed sharp opposition over the current center-right government’s intent to allocate a two-million-euro grant to the Holy Cross Greek Orthodox School Of Theology in the Boston area.
The school is the main seminary for the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America.
The grant, announced by Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis during his official visit to the United States and immediately after his meeting with the Archbishop of America, His Eminence Elpidophoros, aims to support study programs and to boost Greek-language education and culture.

Nevertheless, a former education minister under the previous SYRIZA government, Nikos Filis, sharply criticized the decision, posting a relevant statement on a social media account.
Filis heads SYRIZA’s education sector, a type of ‘shadow minister’ of the main opposition.
