Main opposition SYRIZA on Monday accused the government of “doublespeak” regarding the curbs imposed on the Church due to coronavirus and of ‘petty political’ games at the expense of the citizens’ sacrifices.

In an announcement, the party deplored “the tragic images of citizens receiving Holy Communion in churches in the midst of the pandemic,” and noted that “at a time when the vast majority of the citizens have patiently stayed at home for almost a month, it is not simply a matter of the personal responsibility of a small minority.”

According to SYRIZA, it was a direct result of the “unprecedented” mixed messages that the government has been sending out since the first day of the pandemic concerning the restrictions imposed on the church.

“On Friday, the government spokesperson was urging the citizens to circumvent the measures and worship privately in their parish church during Holy Week, while yesterday we saw the [ND-affiliated] mayor of Corfu break the quarantine,” the party said, adding that the actions taken by the government after the fact “cannot hide ND’s petty political games at the expense of the citizens’ sacrifices”.
