Med7 group reiterates support, solidarity for Greece and Cyprus amid Turkish provocations, belligerance

Leaders of the MED7 group of southern European countries expressed their full support and solidarity towards Greece and Cyprus this week, in the face of repeated infringements on their sovereignty and sovereign rights by Erdogan-led Turkey — while also condemning official Turkey’s confrontational actions over the recent period.

The Euro-Mediterranean conference was hosted by French President Emanuel Macron on Thursday on the island of Corsica.

The Declaration of Ajaccio, which was signed by the leaders of Greece, France, Italy, Spain, Portugal, Malta and Cyprus, stressed that all countries must comply with the International Law of the Sea and resolve differences through dialogue.

The seven European leaders also welcomed the mediation effort of EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs Josep Borrell, and German leadership, to achieve a resumption of dialogue between Greece and Turkey regarding the maritime zones, while also calling Ankara to seek dialogue. Otherwise, they said, EU sanctions must be considered.

In a first and very high-profile reaction to the Med7 declaration, the now unabashedly Islamist Turkish president posted an older video on his Twitter account, prior to his tenure as prime minister, where he warned his then secular Kemalist opponents in Turkey that a “…table of wolves is being readied… you wolves won’t be able to eat us, we’re too big”.
