A press release issued on Tuesday by the Metropolitan Cathedral of St. Demetrius in the northern city of Thessaloniki categorically denies any link between last October’s celebration of the great feast day of St. Demetrius, the patron saint of the ancient metropolis, and a subsequent spreading of the Covid-19 virus in the region.
The development comes amid a second and ongoing partial nationwide lockdown in the country due to the pandemic.
Certain media outlets and social media users have repeatedly and insolently accused the Holy Metropolis of Thessaloniki of failing to impose strict public assembly measures at the time in order to prevent the spread of the virus.
The statement reads, among others, that “…for nearly 100 days we have remained silent, not in fear or out of guilt, but so as not to aggravate these conflicts … with great surprise and sorrow, however, we are witnessing the creation of cunning fake impressions…ones manufacturing non-existent events  and disseminating subjective claims as certainties.”
