Metropolitan Hilarion of Volokolamsk opens public museum at the Church of ‘Joy of All Who Sorrow’ Icon of the Mother of God in Bolshaya Ordynka Street in Moscow
On 3rd December 2019, a church museum opened at the Centre of Religious Education in the territory of the Church of ‘Joy of All Who Sorrow’ Icon of the Mother of God in Bolshaya Ordynka Street in Moscow. Among the museum’s exhibits are works of art which had been kept at the parish or in private collections.
The opening ceremony was led by Metropolitan Hilarion of Volokolamsk, chairman of the Moscow Patriarchate’s Department for External Church Relations.
As the archpastor noted in his speech, at this new public museum visitors will see icons, vestments, church utensils, and various artefacts collected over the long history of the church and pertaining to the life of the parish. “Everyone can come to the museum and see its exhibits,” Metropolitan Hilarion said.
He cordially thanked all those who had helped creating the museum and restore the building which houses the exposition.
Among those who spoke at the opening ceremony was also Ms. Zelfira Tregulova, director of the State Tretyakov Gallery. She said, in particular: “It seems right to me when museums are being established at churches with the assistance of benefactors and serious experts. I regard such rapprochement as a matter of utmost importance, for what you are doing, what the museum and museum workers are doing is, in essence, showing concern for human memory and human soul. We should combine our efforts.”
