Metropolitan of Corfu calls for postponement in Holy Synod session to consider autocephaly for Ukrainian Church
Τhe Metropolitan of Corfu and Paxous, His Eminence Nektarios, on Friday called for a postponement in any decision by the Church of Greece regarding the issue of the Tomos of Autocephaly for the Ukrainian Orthodox Church.
Nektarios spoke ahead of Saturday’s extraordinary session by members of the Autocephalous Orthodox Church of Greece’s Holy Synod, which was convened in order to consider a proposal on the matter by the Archbishop of Athens and All Greece, His Beatitude Ieronymos.
The Archbishop is expected to present his proposal to Holy Synod hierarchs for deliberation.
Nevertheless, Nektarios on Friday advised that no decision should be taken as yet, saying “…because I consider that the period is not suitable for taking a decision regarding this thorny issue, and because geopolitical conditions in the wider region are not normalized, the result will be that such a decision could possibly create more difficulties for our country…therefore, I believe we should postpone taking this decision. It would be conducive to await the ancient Patriarchates of our Church, which proceed us in canonical order, allowing them to decide first…”
