METROPOLITAN PETROS OF CAESAREA (FORMERLY AKSUM) REPOSES IN THE LORD

His Eminence Metropolitan Petros of Caesarea, formerly of Aksum, of the Patriarchate of Alexandria reposed in the Lord in a hospital in Athens today at the age of 88.

He served as a hierarch in various positions for 46 years.

Patriarch Theodoros served a Trisagion for the repose of his soul today with other hierarchs of the Patriarchate in Kenya, reports the Patriarchate website.

Met. Petros’ funeral will be held on Thursday, November 26, after the Divine Liturgy at the Church of the Panagia Marmariotissa in Athens. He will be buried in the cemetery in the Chalandri district of Athens.

The Patriarchate will be represented by Metropolitan Emmanuel of Prolemaid.

Met. Peter was born on the island of Zakynthos in 1932. He graduated from the Theological Faculty of the University of Athens and was ordained to the diaconate in 1955 and the priesthood in 1956. He served as chancellor of the Metropolis of Elassona from 1956 to 1970, and in 1970 he became a cleric of the Patriarchate of Alexandria.

On December 17, 1972, he was consecrated as titular Bishop of Bablyonos, and served as Patriarchal Vicar of Cairo from 1972 to 1979. On November 30, 1979, he was elected as Metropolitan of Aksum. He served as Patriarchal Exarch of the Metropolis of Kenya from 1996 to 1997. On October 27, 2004, he was appointed Exarch of the Patriarchate in Athens and was awarded the title of Elder.

He resigned on November 26, 2018, and that day was elected titular Metropolitan Elder of Caesarea in Africa.
