An anxiously awaited amendment to a controversial law passed by the previous Montenegro government were ratified by a majority of deputies in the small Adriatic country’s parliament this week.

The law, which had been billed as dealing with religious freedoms, was sharply criticized and strongly opposed by the Orthodox Church in Montenegro, with hierarchs warning that it was a thinly veiled effort to seize the Church’s properties, holy relics and to lessen its historic role in the predominately Christian Orthodox nation.
