More instances of vandalism of churches and chapels around Greece over the recent period have caused grief and revulsion. After vandals desecrated an icon of the Theotokos in a chapel in central Thessaloniki recently, the small church of St. Panteleimonas and a chapel outside the Cathedral of St. Sophia were vandalized recently.
On the eastern Aegean island of Chios, a majority of city council members expressed support for the parish of St. George, in the Vrontados district, against a plan by the central government to construct a closed migrants shelter on property owned by the church.
Members of the council also rejected a proposal to allow construction of the shelter on municipal land.
