Mt. Athos Civil Gov. Martinos tours Halki Seminary ahead of scheduled renovation
The Civil Governor of Mt. Athos, Athanasios Martinos, has pledged to finance the complete renovation of the Theological School of Halki and the adjacent Monastery of the Holy Trinity, both located on the small Marmara Sea isle of the same name.
Martinos, a noted shipowner and philanthropist, reiterated his pledge after being received by the Ecumenical Patriarch of Constantinople, His All Holiness Bartholomew I.
The buildings of the complex, except for the Cathedral, were constructed in 1844. Damages resulted from an earthquake in 1894, with repairs subsequently made to allow for the operation of the Patriarchate’s historic seminary and the monastery.
Martinos, accompanied by the treasurer of the Theological School of Halki, the Metropolitan of Myron, His Eminence Chrysostomos, and the latter’s associates, visited the seminary and monastery again this week to survey the properties.
