ND rapporteurs in Parliament: No need for revisions in Church-state constitutional articles

Members of a relevant Parliament committee deliberating over constitutional revision proposals, on Wednesday discussed current articles dealing with Church-state relations, as well as the prospect of a mandatory political oath.

As expected, rapporteurs for ruling New Democracy party, nevertheless, emphasized that there is no need to revise articles dealing with Church-state relations. According to deputy Stavros Keletsis, elected from the Evros prefecture with New Democracy, “… the issue of religious freedom and religious neutrality is fully guaranteed by Article 1 of the constitution. Therefore, if we revise this article, in essence, we would be delving into the Church of Greece’s internal affairs.”
