New Montenegro justice minister schedules meetings with religious institutions’ reps; controversial law threatening Church at forefront

The new justice minister in Montenegro, Vladimir Leposavic is scheduling meetings with representatives of religious institutions in the small Adriatic country, including with the leadership of the Patriarchate of Serbia’s Metropolitinate of Montenegro and the Littoral, which represents the oldest and, by far, the largest religious denomination in the country.

The Orthodox Church in Montenegro, led by the recently reposed Metropolitan Amphilochios, bitterly opposed a law passed by the previous Montenegro government – which was swept from power in an election several weeks ago. The controversial law threatens to confiscate religious institutions’ properties and relics, and also downgrades the status of the Orthodox Church in Montenegro.

The new government has pledged, even before the election, to overturn the anti-religion law.
