St. Nicholas Church will be built in Antarctica, according to the Gorno-Altai Diocese.

With the blessing of Patriarch Kirill, Archbishop Kallistrat of Gorno-Altai and Chemal made a trip to the Novolazarevskaya Antarctic Research Station located in the South-Eastern part of the Schirmacher Oasis on the coast of Queen Maud Land, about 80 km from the Lazarev Sea coast.

The archbishop consecrated the site for construction of a chapel in honor of St. Nicholas, the patron of travelers and sailors.

At the moment, the only permanent Russian church in Antarctica is the Holy Trinity Church built in 2004 at the Russian Bellingshausen Station on Waterloo Island. Besides, in 2011, a small chapel of St. Vladimir was built at the Ukrainian Antarctic station Akademik Vernadsky in 2011.
