Orthodox Church in Montenegro says govt there uninterested in discussing controversial law on religious institutions

Members of the Episcopal Council of the Orthodox Church in Montenegro this week charged that recent developments in the small Adriatic country clearly point to the fact that the Montenegrin government has essentially terminated dialogue with the Church over a controversial law on religious institutions.

According to the Orthodox Church in Montenegro, the specific law is directly aimed against it, as it foresees the confiscation, by the state, of assets and relics in case the Church cannot provide deeds and titles prior to WWI.

Six months have passed since the contentious law was ratified, despite warnings by the Church, legal experts and much of the political opposition over its unconstitutionality.

Peaceful protests and prayer rallies are set to resume on Sunday in the country against the law, and in support of a consolidation of peace, justice and fraternal rapprochement in the country.
