Patriarch Daniel ascribes glory to God on 160th anniversary of Romanian Principalities’ Union

On Thursday, January 24, 2019, His Beatitude Patriarch Daniel officiated a Te Deum thanksgiving service at the Patriarchal Cathedral in Bucharest marking the 160th anniversary of the Union of the Romanian Principalities of Moldavia and Wallachia.

The service was attended by Romania’s President Klaus Werner Iohannis, the President of the Romanian Academy Ioan-Aurel Pop, the State Secretary for Religious Affairs Victor Opaschi, patriarchal auxiliary bishop Varlaam of Ploiesti, the assistant bishop to the Archdiocese of Bucharest Timotei of Prahova, state officials, academicians, clergy, theology professors and students.

Following the religious service, the Head of State and the Patriarch of Romania took part in a flower-laying ceremony at the Alexandru Ioan Cuza Memorial on the Hill of the Patriarchate.

The union of the two principalities of Moldavia and Wallachia, which were under Turkish suzerainty, was back then one of the main desiderata of the Romanian people, alongside winning national freedom.

The unification of the two principalities was also the essence of what was used to be called “the Romanian question,” which came back to the attention of the big European powers amidst the Crimean War (1853-56).
