Patriarch of Alexandria: Orthodox Church to play key spiritual role in the ‘continent of the future’
His Beatitude Patriarch Theodore of Alexandria arrived in Athens to attend the proceedings of the International Scientific Conference organised by the Holy Synod of the Church of Greece on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the establishment of the journal “Theologia”.
The Patriarch was welcomed at the Athens International Airport “Eleftherios Venizelos” by the Vice President of the Organising Committee and the Member of the Conference, His Eminence Metropolitans Chrysostomos of Chalkida and His Eminence Metropolitan Dionysios of Korinthos, respectively.
Then, at the entrance of the Athens Concert Hall, where the Conference was taking place, the Patriarch of Alexandria was welcomed by the Secretary of the Organising Committee, Mr. Alexandros Katsiaras, Managing editor of the journal “Theologia”.
His Beatitude Archbishop Ieronymos of Athens and All Greece, members of the Organising Committee of the Conference and members of the Holy Synod of the Hierarchy of the Church of Greece welcomed the Patriarch. The Patriarch of Alexandria stressed that the topic of this Conference was particularly timely, since our times are characterised by the prevalence of digitalisation at the expense of physical presence.
Patriarch Theodore of Alexandria pointed out in his speech: “The Orthodox Church and its rich theological tradition is therefore called upon to play an important role in the spiritual progress of the ‘continent of the future’, as our late predecessor and spiritual father, Pope and Patriarch Parthenios III of Africa, called it.
Concluding his greeting, the Patriarch of Alexandria stressed the important contribution of the Journal “Theologia” to the theological education and referred to its founding in 1923 by the late Archbishop of Athens and All Greece Chrysostomos Papadopoulos. He also referred to the first Director, late Professor Gregory Papamichael, who created the journal based on the magazine “Ekklesiastikos Faros’ (Ecclesiastical Lighthouse), of the Church of Alexandria, which they had published in 1908.
