The political crisis in the small Adriatic country of Montenegro continues to simmer, after the current government drafted and ratified a contentious law that obliges religious institutions to provide proof of ownership and titles for properties, assets and relics dating to before 1914.

The Serbian Orthodox Church, representing the largest and oldest faith in Montenegro, has vigorously declared that the law is mostly aimed at harming it.

Moreover, while dozens of thousands of people in the country continue to hold twice-weekly prayer masses and peaceful protests, the head of Montenegro’s armed forces, Brig. Gen. Dragutin Dakić this week warned that there is no place in the country’s military for officers or soldiers who want to defend the Church from the law.
