Possibility of extension of lockdown measures in Greece

The possibility of an extension of the current nationwide lockdown in Greece, due to the pandemic, appeared on the horizon this week. The current public assembly restrictions and suspension of many retail commercial activities are set to expire on Monday, barring an extension of the measures.
The same restrictions, which apply until Monday, include a ban on the presence worshipers during Church services, although personal worship and prayer is allowed.

The Church of Greece has vigorously demanded that cathedrals and chapels open to worshipers for Church-going, while responsibly accepting a ceiling on the number of worshipers allowed inside, based on buildings’ floor sizes, and with all public health precautions in place, such as the mandatory wearing of face masks.

Members of the permanent Holy Synod of the Autocephalous Orthodox Church of Greece will again convene on Tuesday to consider the situation.
