Protests, reactions continue against law in Montenegro that Orthodox Church says targets it
Reactions, including street protests, continued in the small Adriatic country of Montenegro on Thursday, a day after the new year commenced, in the wake of ratification of a law last week that the Orthodox Church there considers as extremely detrimental to its interests.
The Metropolitanate of Montenegro and the Littoral, which is under the canonical jurisdiction of the Serbian Patriarchate, has accused the government in Podgorica of passing legislation that threatens its properties and relics with confiscation.
“These rallies demonstrate that the faithful will defend, with all their strength, the holy tenants of their faith. Even the Turkish conquerors respected Church property during the years of slavery,” a representative of the Metropolitanate, told protestors on Wednesday in the Montenegrin capital.
