Russian President Vladimir Putin visited the main Cathedral of the Russian Armed Forces on Monday.
Putin was accompanied by Patriarch of Moscow and All Russia, His Holiness Kirill, and Russian Defense Minister Sergey Shoygu.
The cathedral was consecrated on June 14, and is dedicated to the Resurrection of Christ.
The cathedral is located in a military-patriotic theme park in a Moscow suburb. References to World War II and the military history of Russia and the USSR are evident both in the decoration of the interior and in the additions made to the exterior of the church.
The visit by Putin was combined with commemorative events coinciding with the 79th anniversary of Nazi Germany’s invasion of the Soviet Union, operation Barbarossa, during the Second World War, known in Russia as “Great Patriotic War.”
