Central Macedonia regional governor Apostolos Tzitzikostas headed a meeting on Monday convened to gauge progress in restoring weather-related damages on the semi-autonomous monastic community of Mount Athos.
The damages were the result of particularly heavy thunderstorms on the northern Greece peninsula last month.
Tzitzikostas noted that “…we have a debt to protect Mount Athos”.
In reply, the Civil Governor of Mount Athos, Athanasios Martinos, said the area is facing increased instances of weather-related damage, which he attributed to climate change. He added that civil protection measures must be taken and restoration works accelerated.
