The Holy Synod of the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople on Tuesday announced the canonization of the late Metropolitan of Edessa, Pella and Almopias, Kallinikos.

The Holy Synod, chaired by the Ecumenical Patriarch of Constantinople, His All Holiness Bartholomew I, convened in the Swiss city of Chambésy.

Kallinikos’ memory will be commemorated with a feast day on Aug. 8.

St. Kallinikos, whose secular name was Dimitrios Poulos, was born in the village of Sitaralona, outside the town of Agrinio, in western Greece in 1919. He studied theology at the Theological School of Athens and was ordained a deacon and then a presbyter in 1957 by his brother, Metropolitan Konstantinos of Didymoteicho.

In June 1967, he was ordained Bishop of Edessa and Pella.

Kallinikos reposed in the Lord in Athens in August 1984.

The current Metropolitan of Edessa, His Eminence Joel, spoke today to the Orthodoxia news agency regarding the canonization of the latest saint of Orthodoxy.
