The municipality of Elefsina, west of Athens proper in the same-name industrial district, will proceed with major upgrades to its main square and a nearby early Christian basilica dedicated to St. Zachariah, projects linked with the promotion of the adjacent archaeological site of Elefsis, considered as one of the largest and most important in Greece.
The specific archaeological site is often overlooked by visitors, who are drawn to the Athens Acropolis and its renowned Parthenon Temple.
Greek Culture Minister Lina Mendoni recently toured the projects in order to be briefed over underway improvement to the outdoor site and museum, ahead of the European Capitals of Culture for 2023 events, as the municipality of Elefsina will be one of the honored European cities.
