Resurgence of Orthodoxy on Imvros

The Metropolitan of Imvros and Tenedos, His Eminence Kirillos, on Tuesday led a procession of numerous pilgrims who hail from Imvros, an island in the extreme northeast Aegean, to a remote mountain chapel for the holding of a Divine Liturgy, on the occasion of the Nativity of the Theotokos, the All-Virgin Mary.

The chapel, dedicated to the Theotokos, is located on Mt. Arasia.

Imvros hosted an exclusively Greek Orthodox population prior to 1923, when the island was handed to Turkey in the Lausanne Treaty.
After decades of abandonment and emigration, the ethnic Greek population is slowly returning, with primary schools opening and chapels restored.
