Following a Te Deum thanksgiving service officiated on Thursday at the Patriarchal Cathedral in Bucharest, the Patriarch of Romania and President Klaus Iohannis laid flowers to the memorial of Prince Alexandru Ioan Cuza as a sign of gratitude to the one who helped the Romanian Principalities be united in one state 160 years ago.
The ceremony began with the national anthem being performed by the military band.
The events dedicated to the 160th anniversary of the Union of the Romanian Principalities continued with a communication session organized by the Romanian Academy and the Romanian Patriarchate at Patriarch Teoctist Hall of the Patriarchate’s Palace.
Every year, Romanians celebrate the Union of the Principalities of Moldavia and Wallachia which took place on January 24, 1859, honouring the first ruler prince of the United Principalites, Alexandru Ioan Cuza.
On January 24, Te Deum thanksgiving services are being officiated in all churches within the Romanian Patriarchate “as a gratification brought to God for the accomplishment of this fundamental act in our national history, to which the Romanian Orthodox Church has contributed significantly.”
