Preparations are made for the sanctification of the Holy Chrism in the Romanian Orthodox Church next week.

This celebration takes place approximately once every ten years, when the reserve of Holy Chrism nears depletion, in accordance with the pastoral and missionary needs of an Autocephalous Orthodox Church.

When will the sanctification take place?
After completing the preparation of the Holy Chrism, the sanctification ceremony will take place on Maundy Thursday, at the Patriarchal Cathedral.

Who will perform the sanctification?
The sanctification ceremony will take place during the Divine Liturgy of Saint Basil the Great presided over by His Beatitude Patriarch Daniel. Concelebrants for the service will include the hierarchs of the Romanian Orthodox Church.

When is Holy Chrism used?
The Holy Chrism is used for the consecration of churches, the sanctification of antimins and during the Sacrament of Chrismation (Confirmation), following baptism.

In ancient times, Holy Chrism was used to anoint Orthodox monarchs, kings and ruler princes during their coronation ceremony.

How is it prepared?
The Holy Chrism is prepared from oil and another fragrant essences, which symbolize the variety of gifts of the Holy Spirit that the chrismated Christian receives.

When was is sanctified last time?
Last time when Holy Chrism was sanctified in Romania was in 2010 during the patriarchal stewardship of His Beatitude Patriarch Daniel.
