The specter of continued low birth rates in Greece, well-chronicled since at least 1981, were again highlighted in a recent address by Greek President Prokopis Pavlopoulos, who referred to a national crisis.

On his part, the Metropolitan of Dimitriados, His Eminence Ignatios, detailed the contemporary social problems in Greece that often prevent young adults from creating their own families. The Metropolitan spoke to participants at an Economist conference in Athens.

The Church of Greece hierarch also called on the state and institutions to take substantive actions and interventions, ones based on specific timetables, as he said, to counter the shrinking and aging of Greece’s population.
