Tense situation in Montenegro amid state crackdown on Orthodox Church – (VIDEOS)
The situation the small Adriatic country of Montenegro remains tense, as the government there continues its persecution of the Orthodox Church – only months after legislating and ratifying an utterly controversial law that allows the state to confiscate religious institutions’ properties and relics, unless the latter can provide ownership deeds and titles prior to WWI.
The latest inflammatory incident came this week, when the Bishop of Niksic, His Grace Ioannicus, along with another seven Orthodox clerics, was detained by police after a litany on the feast day of St. Basil of Ostrog.
The outdoor litany was led by the Metropolitan-Bishop of Montenegro and the Littoral, His Eminence Amphilochios, and attended by hundreds of faithful.
According to an announcement by the Metropolitinate, the objective of police in the small Adriatic country was to humiliate the Orthodox Bishop, with authorities first attempting to violently drag the hierarch to a police station, instead of allowing him to voluntarily appear the next day. Dozens of people protested the outside the police station, singing hymns and demanding an end to state persecution of Orthodoxy in Montenegro.
