The feast of All Saints in Sydney

The memory of All Saints was honoured in the Holy Archdiocese of Australia with due ecclesiastical splendour and devotion. The focus of the services was the celebrating parish in Belmore, Sydney where, on the eve of the feast, His Eminence Archbishop Makarios of Australia officiated at the Great Vespers Service while on the feast-day, he presided at the Festal Divine Liturgy.

Addressing the faithful on the day that our Church honours the memory of all the saints without exception, His Eminence explained that the issue of holiness is not distant and inaccessible for people of our time. “Becoming a saint is not something of the past,” he noted, adding that holiness can, and should, be a goal of modern man. “Today, the Church invites us to realise that we, too, can become saints,” he pointed out, “that we too can follow in the footsteps of the saints.” In fact, he explained that the basic characteristic of all the saints is that “the first love of their heart was Christ” and he paternally encouraged the faithful to set the same priority among the rest of the plans they make for their lives.

During the Divine Liturgy, Archbishop Makarios raised Fr Chris Triantafyllou to the rank of protopresbyter, who has been serving for 44 years at the Parish of All Saints. He spoke of a worthy clergyman who “has served with much devotion, love, modesty and humility,” and asked Fr Chris to continue with the same spirit of sacrifice and offering in his ministry to the people of God, for Christ’s glory and the holy Archdiocese of Australia. In fact, the chant “Axios” (“Worthy”) was heard for a second time within the festive and celebratory atmosphere of the day as His Eminence tonsured the young Lambros Lambrou as a Reader, in whom he recognised a young man who lives a spiritual life and loves Christ and the Church.

Finally, the Archbishop referred with words of praise to Fr Kyrillos Zisis, who took over the duties as Parish Priest at All Saints during the difficult time of the beginning of the Coronavirus pandemic. However, Fr Kyrillos has quickly managed to gain the love and respect of his parishioners, as His Eminence noted with satisfaction. “I am very pleased because I hear good words from everyone,” he said among other things and believes that the new Parish Priest “will greatly help the parish to move forward and to advance spiritually, as well as in all other areas.”

Among the faithful who attended the celebrating Parish of All Saints was the state politician, The Hon. Courtney Houssos, MLC; the Greek NSW politician, Ms Sophie Cotsis, MP; the President and members of the Board of the Parish – Community of Belmore; as well as the Head of School and a delegation of students representing All Saints Grammar.
