The Path of the Saints Procession: Romanians welcome Saint Lazarus on Patriarchal Hill

Priests and faithful from the Archdiocese of Bucharest, along with pilgrims from across the country, participated in the “Path of the Saints” procession through the streets of the capital on Thursday as part of the celebrations of Saint Demetrius the New.

After the procession, the Cypriot delegation, which brought the relics of Saint Lazarus, the friend of the Lord—one of the people raised from the dead by Jesus Christ—was received on the Patriarchal Hill.

“This is a powerful symbol of victory over death and of God’s boundless love for humanity,” said His Beatitude Patriarch Daniel upon welcoming Saint Lazarus at the outdoor altar of the Patriarchal Cathedral.

Archbishop George of Cyprus attended the event, making his first official visit to Romania as leader of the Church of Cyprus. The Cypriot delegation also included Metropolitan Nektarios of Kition.

“We have come to receive the blessing of the Romanian saints: Saint Andrew the Apostle, the First-Called, Saint Demetrius the New, the Protector of Bucharest, Saint Paraskeva, and Saint John Jacob the New Chozebite,” said His Beatitude Archbishop George, who will concelebrate the Divine Liturgy with Patriarch Daniel on Sunday, during the feast of Saint Demetrius the New.

The pilgrimage began on Sunday morning, and thousands of believers have already passed by Saint Demetrius’s reliquary. The number of pilgrims is expected to increase with the arrival of Saint Lazarus’s relics.
