Greece’s second largest city, the northern metropolis of Thessaloniki, is witnessing a three-day series of events and commemorations, beginning on Saturday, the Feast Day of St. Demetrius, the Holy & Great Martyr and Myrrh-streamer, as well as the ancient city’s patron saint.

Oct. 26 also marks the 107th anniversary of the city’s liberation from Ottoman rule during the First Balkan War.

An annual military parade will take place on Monday, Oct. 28, marking the 79th anniversary of Greece’s entry into World War II, “OXI” Day.

An archieratic and celebratory Divine Liturgy was held on Friday at Thessalonik’s St. Demetrius Metropolitan Cathedral, officiated by the Metropolitan of Serres and Nigrita, His Eminence Theologos, upon the invitation of the Metropolitan of Thessaloniki, His Eminence Anthimos.

In a sermon, Theologos referred to the life and works of St. Demetrius, stressing that the saint today shows us that faith is a treasure of one’s life, one that should be maintained and bestowed to the coming generations.

A procession of the Saint’s Holy Relic and wonder-working icon through central Thessaloniki followed.
