Tirana, Albania – St Procopius Church receives land ownership certificate
Church of St. Procopius in Tirana did not have a certificate of ownership, which held hostage the project to return to its identity like many other cult objects in Albania that are still not equipped with such a document.
After the unanimous decision of the Municipal Council of Tirana, the Mayor Erion Veliaj handed over the document that gives the ownership of the land on which it is built to the Church of St. Procopius, in the Park of the Artificial Lake of Tirana. This paves the way for the reconstruction of the religious building, which dates back 240 years ago.
“I believe it is a great blessing for everyone, not just you who serve in the Church of St. Procopius, or the Orthodox community. God has given us the will to serve with dignity and to do it properly”, said Veliaj among others, during the handing over of the donation contract to the Archbishop of Tirana, Durrës and all of Albania, Anastasios.
On his part, Archbishop Anastasios, expressing his gratitude to Mayor Veliaj, said “Congratulations for the work here in Tirana”, among other things.
In 1967, the Church of St. Procopius also suffered the fate of all other cult objects. It was maimed and a coffee-restaurant “Lake” was set up in its place. But even after the restoration of the previous function, 30 years later, this church still today has not managed to get neither the appearance nor the glory of the past.
