Turkish Cypriot leaders claims Varosha ‘theirs’, cites Muslim charity foundation ‘titles’ prove this

The new leader of the Turkish Cypriot community on the divided island republic this week continued his verbal provocations, taking his cue from Ankara, which illegally occupies one-third of Cyprus.

Ersin Tatar told media in the occupied areas of Cyprus that “…Varosha is ours”, a reference to a coastal ghost town abandoned since August 1974.

To back up the latest unsubstantiated Turkish claim, Tatar said titles of ownership had been found in Muslim religious foundations, known in Turkish as Vakufs.

Of course, as widely known, the cosmopolitan Varosha resort before the Turkish invasion was a predominately Greek-Cypriot community.
