Twin celebrations for Patriarchate of Alexandria and All Africa
Today marks a twin celebration for the Patriarchate of Alexandria and All Africa, given that Wednesday is the Feast Day of St. Gerasimos II Palladas, the Greek Orthodox Patriarch of Alexandria in the late 17th and early 18th century. The day also marks the anniversary of a full restoration of the name and reputation of St. Nektarios – 77 years after his repose in the Lord, 108 years after he was commanded to leave the Great City of Alexandria, and 37 years since his canonization by the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople.
St. Nektarios, the Wonderworker and Metropolitan of Pentapolis, who was wickedly slandered while serving as a hierarch of the Patriarchate of Alexandria, was fully vindicated after a censure by the then Patriarch in the late 19th century against him was annulled decades later.
The celebrations coincide with the posting on the pages of the Orthodoxia news agency of an exclusive interview by the Patriarch of Alexandria and All Africa, His Divine Beatitude Theodoros II, to journalist Maria Giachnaki.
His Divine Beatitude referred to the prolific missionary and charitable work of the Patriarchate in sub-Saharan Africa, the continued persecution of Christians in the Middle East as well as the contentious issue of autocephaly for the Ukrainian Orthodox Church.
In a heartfelt interview, the Patriarch Theodoros details the trials and tribulations he has faced in his missionary and ecclesiastical work, stressing that he endured with tears and prayers.
Another feature will be posted this week on the missionary work of the Patriarch of Alexandria and All Africa.
