US State Dept. spox: Washington continues to support Cyprus reunification based on bi-zonal, bi-communal federation

A US State Department spokesman on Wednesday reiterated that the United States continues to support the reunification of Cyprus on the basis of a bi-zonal and bi-communal federation.

The spokesman was queried over the latest inflammatory quip by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, who said the island should be permanently divided.

In response to a press question, the spokesman said “…the United States continues to support a comprehensive solution led by the Cypriots to reunite the island into a bi-zonal, bi-communal federation that will benefit all Cypriots as well as the wider area.”

Erdogan had earlier told supporters that the only viable option for Cyprus is a two-state model.
